Life

Adam Schmidt, son of painter Eduard Schmidt (1874-1919) and the painter and art teacher Irmgard Schmidt born Busch (1875-1952), turned to the put-away Abitur at grammar school in Weimar to study mathematics and physics at the University of Jena to which he there in 1939 after health-related interruptions with the acquisition of the academic degree of Dr. rer. nat. completed.

Adam Schmidt then began his professional career as a research assistant at the Braunschweig-Völkenrode Aviation Research Institute , and in 1945 he moved to the Royal Air Force in the same position . Two years later he took up an assistant position with Wilhelm Maier at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Jena, where he qualified as a private lecturer in mathematics in 1951 .

In 1954 Schmidt accepted the professorship with a teaching assignment for mathematics at the University of Rostock , where he was appointed professor with a full teaching assignment for mathematics in 1956, in 1961 as professor with chair for mathematics and finally in 1969 as full professor for analysis , in 1973 he retired . In addition, he held the offices of vice dean and dean at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences on several occasions . From 1968 to 1968 he was head of the Mathematical Institute.

Adam Schmidt, who took over the chairmanship of the North District Section of the Mathematical Society of the GDR in 1969 , died in Rostock in 1990 at the age of 82.

His teaching and research focus was on the theory of differential equations and calculus of variations .
