Mathematical Society of the German Democratic Republic

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mathematical Society of the German Democratic Republic ( MGDDR ) was an association of mathematicians and mathematics teachers in the GDR .

history

The mathematicians of the GDR were organized in the German Mathematicians Association (DMV) until the Berlin Wall was built in 1961 . After that, scientific and organizational cooperation was made more difficult and the GDR members of the DMV were forced by their respective offices to leave the DMV.

On June 8, 1962, the Mathematical Society of the German Democratic Republic was founded in Berlin, the first chairman was Kurt Schröder . Scientific mathematicians as well as industrial mathematicians and mathematics teachers could become members. The first statute was adopted on August 28, 1963 at the 1st general meeting in Weimar. Organizationally, the work of the MGDDR was managed by a secretariat with three full-time employees. The company's organizational units were district and specialist sections or interest groups. Their tasks consisted in the organization and implementation of further training courses and specialist conferences, influencing the corresponding specialist journals and liaising with other social organizations in the GDR such as the Urania - Society for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge and the GDR Cultural Association .

The society elected a board every two years. In 1981 an expanded statute was adopted. In 1989 the MGDDR had about 1,300 members.

After the reunification in the GDR, the MGDDR was constituted as an association in May 1990 . In September 1990 a general meeting of the DMV took place in Bremen under the chairmanship of Friedrich Hirzebruch and in Dresden a general meeting of the MGDDR under the chairmanship of Rolf Klötzler . As a result of the resolutions of these general meetings, the two organizations were combined to form the DMV; the members of the MGDDR mostly joined the DMV. Some structures and ideas of the MGDDR were included in the statutes of the DMV, such as the possibility of membership of mathematics teachers and industrial mathematicians, the topics of some sections and the design of the newsletters. The files of the MGDDR were handed over to the DMV by Rolf Klötzler and stored in the University Archives Freiburg i. Br. Kept.

Communications from the Mathematical Society of the GDR

From 1966 the MGDDR published the messages of the Mathematical Society of the GDR in -house , from 1968 to 1990 four editions appeared per year. The work on the announcements was led by an editorial committee of around five employees, which was appointed by the board. The communications published reports on the Society's meetings, conference lectures and research results, contributions on the history of mathematics and reviews.
