Wolfgang Engel (born April 10, 1928 in Ammendorf , † October 5, 2010 in Rostock ) was a German mathematician .

Life

Engel studied mathematics and physics in Halle from 1946 with the teaching examination in 1950. In 1953 he received his doctorate under Heinrich Wilhelm Ewald Jung and Ott-Heinrich Keller (higher type of prime divisors in the rational function field of n variables and their behavior in Cremona transformations). In 1957 he completed his habilitation in Halle and was a private lecturer there in 1958. From 1959 he was a professor at the University of Rostock . From 1962 to 1964 and 1990/91 he was dean and from 1966 to 1969 prorector for scientific development in Rostock. In 1993 he retired, but continued to teach until 1997.

1974 to 1981 he was chairman of the Mathematical Society of the GDR . From 1962 to 1974, as chairman of the Central Committee for the Olympics of Young Mathematicians in the GDR , he was in charge of the GDR 's Mathematics Olympics and was team leader for the participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad . In 1998 he received the Paul Erdős Award from the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions.

From 1974 he was a member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR . In 1983 he became an Honored Teacher of the People and in 1969 he received the Badge of Honor from the University of Rostock and the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

He wrote a history of mathematics at the University of Rostock.

Wolfgang Engel was married to the mathematician Helga Engel, b. Gift Their son Konrad (* 1956) has been professor for mathematical optimization at the University of Rostock since 1992.
