The orchid Adamantinia miltonioides is the only species in the genus Adamantinia . It was only described in 2004. The small plants grow epiphytically and are native to the Brazilian state of Bahia .

description

Adamantinia miltonioides forms on a creeping rhizome short distance sprouts . These are thickened to form oval pseudobulbs . They consist of an internode and are four to five centimeters high. At the tip of the pseudobulbs there is a single, rarely a second, smaller leaf . The coarse leaves are oblong-oval, about six to eight centimeters long by two to three centimeters wide, pointed at the end, at the base with a separating tissue to the pseudobulb.

The racemose , about 30 centimeters long inflorescence appears without a flower sheath at the tip of the shoot. It bears up to eight resupinated flowers . The flowers reach a diameter of about six centimeters and are pink in color. The sepals are lanceolate, the petals much wider. The lip is three-lobed, with the side lobes only very small visible at the base of the lip. The lip is fused with the column at the base, the free part of the lip is approximately perpendicular to the column and is spread out. A light yellow spot can be seen from the base of the lip to the center. The column, about half a centimeter long, is winged. The stamen contains eight pollinia , the stigma is bilobed.

distribution

Adamantinia miltonioides was found in the Brazilian state of Bahia , in the Chapada Diamantina . The plants on which the first description is based grew to a height of about 900 meters in full sun, but other sites are higher. The species grows there as an epiphyte.

Systematics and taxonomy

Within the subfamily Epidendroideae , the genus Adamantinia is classified in the tribe Epidendreae and there in the subtribe Laeliinae . According to a genetic investigation, the genera Leptotes and Isabelia are possible closest relatives . Morphologically , it is more closely related to the genus Hagsatera known from Mexico .

The name of the genus is a Latinized form of "Diamantina", because the area in which it was first found is called "Chapada Diamantina". The species name refers to the similarity of the flower aspect to the genus Miltonia .
