Adolf Katzenmeier
Adolf Katzenmeier (born November 15, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main ; † October 19, 2016 there ) was a German physiotherapist . From 1963 to November 2008 he was in charge of the German national soccer team .
Career
In 1963, national coach Sepp Herberger Katzenmeier, who had previously worked as a team masseur at Eintracht Frankfurt , joined the German Football Association (DFB), where he initially looked after the U-teams. Katzenmeier looked after the German national team from 1974 onwards at seven world championships , eight European championships and in 1988 at the Olympic Games . Until 2008 he was the senior in the team of physiotherapists at the DFB.
The name Adolf Katzenmeier is hardly prominent. However, many TV viewers knew his face with the characteristic gray mustache that was seen again and again when the camera caught the German coaching bench or an injured player. Many consider "Adi" Katzenmeier to be a "secret legend" of German football. In the documentary Germany. Katzenmeier can often be seen a summer fairy tale from 2006. In 2007 the documentary Adolf "Adi" Katzenmeier - The father of the national team by Wolfgang Ettlich was released .
Katzenmeier's involvement at the European Championships in Sweden in 1992 caused a sensation , where he may have saved Guido Buchwald's life, who had swallowed his tongue and collapsed unconscious, by means of a targeted grip in the throat. Katzenmeier explained in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung that he saw Buchwald start to cramp while sprinting onto the field. When Katzenmeier pulled his tongue out of his throat, Buchwald, whose facial muscles also had cramps , bit the masseur's hand, leaving a visible scar.
In November 2008 Katzenmeier ended his career as a physiotherapist with the German national team after the friendly against England .
Katzenmeier was the owner of a physiotherapy practice in Frankfurt until his death. Although the practice specializes in sports physiotherapy, Katzenmeier did not mention his prominent past in the service of the DFB on the practice website. Only one photo shows him together with Franz Beckenbauer .
