Adolf Merkel
Adolf Merkel (born January 11, 1836 in Mainz , † March 30, 1896 in Strasbourg ) was a German legal scholar.
Life
Merkel studied law from 1854 to 1857 at the Hessian Ludwig University of Gießen , the Georg August University of Göttingen and the Friedrich Wilhelms University of Berlin . At the suggestion of Giessen Criminal teacher Johann Michael Franz Birnbaum , he was in 1858 without dissertation Dr. iur. PhD. At the instigation of Rudolf von Jhering , he completed his habilitation in 1862.
In 1868 he was appointed to the Charles University in Prague . Fritz Mauthner was one of his listeners in Prague . Four years later he moved to the University of Vienna as Julius Glaser's successor . In 1874 he went to the new Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . In 1889/90 he was its rector . His rector's speech on May 1, 1889 dealt with the "connection between the development of criminal law and the overall development of public conditions and the intellectual life of peoples" .
Merkel tried to combine a general legal theory with a historical-social-scientific cultural theory of legal development. He died in office at the age of 60.
