Adolf Schläpfer

Adolf Schläpfer (born April 23, 1880 in Herisau ; † March 2, 1948 in St. Gallen ; resident in Herisau) was a Swiss engineer and pioneer in road construction from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Adolf Schläpfer was a son of Johann Schläpfer, Sattler , and Bertha Egger. He married Augusta Becker, daughter of Leonhard Becker, pastor . From 1901 to 1905 he studied civil engineering at the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum Zürich . From 1905 to 1909 he worked in Prussia and Silesia and went on extensive study trips. From 1909 to 1937 he was a canton engineer for Appenzell Ausserrhoden. As a road construction pioneer, Schläpfer built the Hundwilertobel Bridge over the Urnäsch between 1924 and 1925 . At that time it was the largest arch bridge in Europe with a span of 105 meters . He also built the Rotach Bridge near Teufen and the Urnäsch - Schwägalp pass road in 1925 . He had the first dust-free, tarred overland roads in Switzerland built and was committed to the development of paving. In 1931 he was Colonel of the General Staff .
