Adolf Steinhofer
Adolf Steinhofer (born May 13, 1908 in Knittlingen , † August 20, 1990 ) was a German chemist .
Life
After graduating from high school, Adolf Steinhofer studied chemistry at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . During his studies he became a member of the Teutonia Freiburg fraternity . He did his doctorate under the later Nobel Prize winner Hermann Staudinger . In 1935 he joined the IG Farbenindustrie . Initially he dealt with processes for the synthesis of acetylenes. He was then responsible for the construction and operation of production facilities in the Buna factory. After the Second World War, Steinhofer worked for BASF AG , one of the successor companies to IG Farbenindustrie. At the Ludwigshafen site he was initially head of the low pressure department. He managed to switch the production of synthesis gas from coal and coke to oil and natural gas. In addition, the fluidized bed and the fluidized flow process for the preparation of alkenes and synthesis gas from crude oil were established. From 1957 Steinhofer was responsible for all research at BASF AG, of which he was a board member from 1958 to 1973. In addition, as chairman of the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie (1964–1972), he was mainly responsible for the work of young people. In later years he was a member of the board of trustees of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern , which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1982.
The professor goes back to Adolf Steinhofer. Dres. Hc Adolf Steinhofer Foundation, which annually sponsors the Steinhofer Prize for talented young chemists.
