Adolf Stengel

Adolf Stengel (born June 9, 1828 in Radtkehmen near Darkehmen , East Prussia ; † November 22, 1900 in Heidelberg ) was a German agricultural scientist .

Stengel, the son of an accountant, initially worked as an administrator on goods in East Prussia and Russia. In 1849 he began studying at the Agricultural Academy Eldena and in 1852 he received his doctorate from the University of Berlin. He then went to the agricultural college in Bonn-Poppelsdorf as an assistant , where he completed his habilitation in 1855 . From 1857 he worked as a lecturer at the Agricultural Academy Proskau (Silesia) and from 1862 as an associate professor at the Agriculture and Forestry Academy Tharandt (Saxony). In 1865 he was appointed full professor and head of the agricultural college at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic . He was a member of the Heidelberg Masonic Lodge Ruprecht zu den five Rosen .

From 1872, Stengel taught first as an honorary professor, and from 1874 as full professor at Heidelberg University . He gave lectures on agriculture at the newly established Agricultural Institute. When the institute was closed again in 1880 due to insufficient student numbers, he only read for the camerealists studying at the university . Stengel was a popular teacher with an exceptional teaching qualification. He worked more through his word than through his own writings. From 1881 to 1882 he was a member of the German Reichstag as a representative of the German Progressive Party . He was the bearer of several princely orders and awards. In 1891 he was given the title of Hofrat.

On December 31, 1875, he married his second wife Rose (1835–1909), daughter of August Grahl . Stengel was a widower and had a son and two daughters from his first marriage. With Rose Stengel came another daughter Lili (* 1881), who married the surgeon and urologist Friedrich Voelcker in 1909 .
