Adolf Weil (physician)
Adolf Weil (born February 7, 1848 in Heidelberg , † July 23, 1916 in Wiesbaden ) was a German pathologist and internist .
life and work
Adolf Weil, son of the orientalist Gustav Weil and his wife Auguste (née Levy), studied at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and the University of Vienna . In 1871 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg , and the following year he qualified as a professor . Weil became an associate professor at Heidelberg University in 1876. In 1886 he followed a call to the University of Dorpat (full professorship for special pathology and therapy), but had to give up teaching a year later because of larynx tuberculosis. After working in several seaside resorts, he worked as a resident doctor and consultant in Wiesbaden from 1893 .
In 1886, Weil first described the severe form of leptospirosis, which was named after him as Weil's disease .
Honors
In 1883 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
