Detlev Ploog

Detlev Walter Ploog (born November 29, 1920 in Hamburg ; † December 7, 2005 in Munich ) was a German psychiatrist , primate researcher and anthropologist .

From 1939 Ploog studied medicine in Halle , Hamburg and Marburg , was also a soldier, but was able to do his doctorate in Marburg in 1945 and also habilitation in 1955 . From 1958 to 1960 he was a “Visiting Scientist” at the research department for the limbic system in the Laboratory for Neurophysiology of Paul D. MacLean at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda / Maryland, then went to the Max Planck Institute in Munich for psychiatry , where from 1962 he set up the first German laboratory to research the neurobiological basis of the behavior of subhuman primates. From 1966 until his retirement in 1989 he was director of the research clinic.

He has received many awards and honorary memberships: an honorary professorship at the University of Munich , the Federal Cross of Merit 1st class , a visiting fellowship at Rockefeller University in New York , a Dr. phil. hc from the University of Würzburg and through the Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann Medal of the DGKJP and honorary membership in the German Society for Psychology . In 1971 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1972 of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina , 1980 of the Bavarian and 1990 Dutch Academy of Sciences ; For many years he was also a member of the protection commission of the Federal Minister of the Interior .
