Adolph Grünwald (born May 22, 1840 in Affaltrach , † 1925 in Heilbronn ) was a successful businessman , builder and art collector of the Jewish faith.

Life

In the 1850s, Adolph Grünwald visited relatives in America and stayed there, mostly in Cincinnati, until 1861. When he returned home, he founded the manufacturing company Adolph Grünwald in Heilbronn in 1862 on the Kieselmarkt. The house was later demolished and replaced by the Schwarz'sche department store. Adolph Grünwald was a highly educated, well-traveled man who owned a large library in English and German.

Building history

The Grünwald family owned the house at Kaiserstraße 27 at the corner of Schulgasse, as well as the house on Kaiserstraße with the Hofbräu sign, and the elongated house behind Kaiserstraße 40 (later Landauer), which was built by Beutinger.

Art collector

Adolph Grünwald concentrated on objects of the silversmith's art from the 15th to the 18th century and collected, among other things, cups, vessels and bowls from Nuremberg and Augsburg masters; also candlesticks and Jewish cult objects that were later included in the inventory of the synagogue community. Councilor Dr. Peter Bruckmann often borrowed items from him to be copied in his factory, such as a plait style candlestick and other things. Gothic wooden figures formed a second focus of the collection. These include a saint from Tilman Riemenschneider's school and a small altar from the master of Biberach. He also collected paintings from the 15th century, including one by the Master of Crailsheim, a Hans Baldung Grien and a male portrait by Niklas Kremer .
