Adolph von Planta

Adolf von Planta (born May 13, 1820 in Reichenau , † February 25, 1895 in Zurich ) was a Swiss chemist .

Life

Adolf von Planta's father Ulrich von Planta (1791–1875) was a politician and a captain in the military. In 1831 he was in command of the occupation of Neuchâtel, in 1819 he bought Reichenau Castle near Chur and expanded it.

Adolf von Planta went to school in St. Gallen , Ftan , Thuringia and Zurich . He studied in Berlin , Heidelberg and with Justus von Liebig in Giessen . In 1845 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg with a dissertation on alkaloids . In 1847/48 he was on an educational trip to the Orient, England, Norway and France, where he visited King Louis Philippe , who was a teacher at Reichenau Castle during the French Revolution .

He later studied agricultural chemistry and apiculture in Edinburgh , Utrecht and Stuttgart . He had a private laboratory at Reichenau Castle, the ancestral home of his family. Justus von Liebig sent August Kekulé to him as an assistant in 1852/53 . With him he analyzed alkaloids like nicotine . He had another laboratory at the ETH Zurich . In his laboratory he analyzed water and soil samples and made experiments on agriculture (especially bees) and plants. Among other things, he published publications on the composition of honey and royal jelly and on mineral springs in Graubünden.

His laboratory at Reichenau Castle has been preserved in its original state. Von Planta was an honorary member of the British Beekeepers Association.

In 1851 he married Ursina Maria von Muralt.
