Adolphe Henri Philippe Tabarant (born October 8, 1863 in La Possonnière , † August 4, 1950 in Paris ) was a French journalist and art historian .

Life

Tabarant began his professional career in 1882 as a political journalist for the magazine Revue socialiste . A little later he had to leave France because of his political texts and went into exile in Brussels, where he founded the magazine Le Peuple . After another station in exile in Switzerland, he returned to Paris in July 1889 and took part in the international socialist congress. In November of the same year he was one of the co-founders of the artists' association Club de l'Art social , where he met Auguste Rodin and Camille Pissarro, for example . Both Pissarro and later Maximilien Luce shared his socialist ideas. Through Pissarro he met numerous Impressionist painters, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin .

Tabarant wrote for various art magazines, including L'Œuvre under the pseudonym l'Imagier . He has also published biographies on Camille Pissarro, Maurice Utrillo and Maximilien Luce and other art history books. Tabarant is best known for his publications on Édouard Manet . Building on the biography of Antonin Proust , he conducted intensive source research, which also included the detailed questioning of Manet's alleged son Léon Leenhoff . After a first publication on Manet in 1931, he published Manet et ses oeuvres in 1947, the most extensive biography of this artist to date.
