Adriaan Schuurman

Adriaan Cornelis Schuurman (born July 28, 1904 in Kampen , † August 24, 1998 in The Hague ) was a Dutch church musician , liturgist and music teacher .

Life

Schuurman was born in 1904 as the son of the Reformed preacher Martinus Schuurman and his wife Cornelia Johanna, b. de Brey, born in Kampen. He began studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1925, which he continued from 1927 to 1931 at the Conservatory in Amsterdam , among others with Cornelis de Wolf and Sem Dresden . In 1942 he became cantor and organist at the Sint-Joriskerk in Amersfoort . From 1950 to 1974 he held the same position at the Maranathakerk in The Hague.

From 1947 Schuurman taught church music at various universities and became the first lecturer for church music at the Dutch Reformed Church . From 1963 to 1969 he was a lecturer at the Conservatory in The Hague, from 1964 to 1973 at the Conservatory in Rotterdam.

Schuurman composed pieces for organ and choir. He was a great advocate of the liturgical movement and contributed to various song books. The best known of his organ works is "Toccata, trio en fuga Psalm 150". In 1981 he composed a cycle of psalms on behalf of the Reformed Organists' Association.

On his 80th birthday, the Centrum voor de Kerkzang Foundation published a commemorative publication in his honor. An organ competition for amateur organists and students is named after Schuurman and was held for the fifth time in Naaldwijk in 2014.
