Adriana Cavarero

Adriana Cavarero (* 1947 in Bra , Province of Cuneo , Piedmont , Italy ) is an Italian philosopher , feminist and university teacher .

Life

Cavarero lived in Turin and Verona in her youth . She studied at the University of Padua , to which it in 1971 with a thesis on philosophy and poetry doctorate and the years to 1984 worked as a scientist. Together with Luisa Muraro and other women, she was one of the founders of the Libreria delle donne di Milano in 1975 . In 1984 a community of women philosophers called Diotima was established . The name is derived from the figure of Diotima of Mantineia , who was described by Socrates as one of the cornerstones of philosophy.

In 1990 Cavarero published her book Nonostante Platone (Plato in spite of it), which was also translated into German , in which she contrasts the ancient philosophical texts of Plato , but also of Homer and Parmenides , with four female figures and frees them from the patriarchal ideas of ancient philosophy. Further publications followed in the 1990s and 2000s, in which she defended feminist and pluralist ideas and denounced violence in today's society.

Cavarero is Professor of Political Philosophy at the Università degli studi di Verona and has previously held visiting professorships at the University of California, Berkeley , the University of California, Santa Barbara , New York University and Harvard University .
