Adrien Bruhl (born September 15, 1902 in Chatou , † April 26, 1973 in Lyon ) was a French ancient historian and Roman provincial archaeologist .

Life

Adrien Bruhl came from a Jewish family who originally came from Germany. His grandfather, the jeweler David Bruhl (1822–1901), was born in Worms and emigrated to France in 1848; his son, Adrien's father Paul Moïse Bruhl (1855–1922), also worked as a jeweler. His half-sister was the science historian Hélène Metzger . Bruhl studied history and geography at the École normal supérieure in Paris from 1923 to 1926 . From 1928 to 1930 he was a member of the École française de Rome , where he found rich inspiration for his scientific studies. His first publications dealt with the Hellenistic influences on the Roman triumphal procession . After another year of study at the École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques in Madrid , Bruhl returned to France and taught at a lyceum in Carcassonne .

The Second World War interrupted Bruhl's career: Due to the racial legislation of the Vichy regime , he was released in 1940 and went into exile in North Africa. He joined the army under General Alphonse Juin and took part in the Italian campaign in 1944 as a translator. He was initially stationed in Naples , later in Rome, where he resumed contact with the École française. In 1946 he was appointed general secretary of the École française. In 1954 Bruhl returned to France after he had been appointed to the chair of antiquity at the University of Lyon . In addition to his duties in academic teaching and self-administration - Bruhl was dean from 1958 to 1963 - he supervised the excavations in the districts of Grenoble (from 1954) and Lyon (from 1962) on behalf of the state .
