Georges Vallet

Georges Vallet (born March 4, 1922 in Pierreclos ( Saône-et-Loire ), † March 29, 1994 in Saint-Symphorien-d'Ancelles (Saône-et-Loire)) was a French classical archaeologist .

Georges Vallet studied from 1943 to 1946 at the École normal supérieure in Paris . After the Agrégation in 1948 he worked briefly as a high school teacher in Aix-les-Bains . From 1948 to 1950 he was a member of the École française de Rome . Since 1950 he has taught at the University of Clermont-Ferrand , since 1956 as a professor. Since 1967 he was a professor at the University of Paris-Nanterre . He also held positions at French institutions abroad in Italy: from 1962 to 1967 as director of the Institut français in Naples , where he founded the Center Jean Bérard in 1966 , from 1968 to 1970 as cultural attaché at the French embassy in Rome , from 1970 to 1983 as director the École française de Rome. From 1983 he was Director of Research at the CNRS .

With François Villard he began the excavations of the Greek colony Megara Hyblaia in Sicily in 1949 and began his studies there on the use, dissemination and trade of Greek ceramics, making him a specialist in Western Greek colonization . In Magara Hyblaia he then dealt in particular with the history of the development of the ancient city.
