Adrien Niyonshuti (born February 2, 1987 in Rwamagana ) is a Rwandan road cyclist and mountain biker .

Athletic career

Adrien Niyonshuti started cycling in 2003. At the Tour of Rwanda he made it into the top ten five times in a row, in 2006 and 2008 he won the overall standings. In 2008 he won three stages, among other things.

He has been riding for the South African Continental Team MTN Cycling since 2009 . In the 2009 season he took part in the Tour of Ireland . It was his first race outside the African continent. In autumn 2009 he was tenth in the individual time trial and in the road race at the African Championships in Namibia , so that he won the bronze medal in the U23 class in both races.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Niyonshuti was his team's flag bearer during the opening ceremony .

Rising from Ashes

In the same year, the multi-award-winning documentary Rising from Ashes was shot about the story of Adrien Niyonshuti, his family and his cycling career . In the genocide in Rwanda , he lost 60 relatives, including six of his brothers; his mother's entire family was wiped out. To cope with his pain, he started cycling in 2003. In 2006 he competed in his first mountain bike race , where he was noticed by the cycling coach Jock Boyer . As a result of the film, the Rising from Ashes Foundation was established.
