occupation

Rising from Ashes is an independent documentary about the development of the national cycling team in Rwanda .

action

Genocide occurred in Rwanda in 1994 , in which an estimated one million people were killed.

In 2006, the professional cyclist Jonathan Boyer , known as Jock , went to Rwanda to help set up a national cycling team. The team consisted of young men, Hutu and Tutsi , who had been orphaned and traumatized by the genocide of the previous decade. In the course of the film, both Boyer and the team “rise” with the help of their successes “from the ashes” of their pasts, because Boyer had failed in his own way in previous years.

The Team Rwanda began as pure cycling organization, but continued to develop, had to recognize as the organizers that the athletes had broader needs. Many drivers were illiterate and malnourished and had neither water nor electricity in their accommodations. They received no medical care and most of them were still suffering from the psychological consequences of the genocide. Eventually, Team Rwanda became a symbol of hope and the drivers were seen as representatives of the country's recovery. In the following years the team expanded its objectives and developed a support model for the athletes. In 2012, the team began building a pan-African team that will one day compete in the Tour de France . One of the drivers, Adrien Niyonshuti , finally qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

Reviews

The Village Voice's Daphne Howland called Rising from Ashes “a remarkable documentary. It's not just about a cycling team; it bears witness to what happens when people take care of one another ”.

"The film is crisp and limited to the essentials," said Frank Schneck of The Hollywood Reporter . "He avoids [...] unnecessary melodrama, which in fact is hardly necessary in a story that already has so much powerful drama attached to it."

production

Rising from Ashes was co-produced over six years by two non-profit organizations, the Gratis 7 Media Group and Project Rwanda . The budget was $ 800,000, all from donations. The film won numerous awards in 2012 and 2013.
