Aeonium canariense is a species of the genus Aeonium in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
Aeonium canariense grows as a perennial , individually growing or group-forming rosette plant . Their cup-shaped rosettes reach a diameter of 10 to 60 centimeters. Inner leaves are more or less upright. The obovate to lanceolate, green, sometimes reddish or yellowish leaves are 6 to 35 centimeters long, 3 to 12 centimeters wide and 0.3 to 1 centimeter thick. They are rounded towards the tip and have an attached tip. The base is wedge-shaped. The leaf surface is velvety with glandular hairs 0.7 to 1 millimeter (rarely up to 1.4 millimeters) long . There are 5 to 15 hairs per square millimeter. The leaf margin is sometimes wavy.
Generative characteristics
The inflorescence has a length of 30 to 45 centimeters and a width of 20 to 30 centimeters. The leafed inflorescence stalk is 12 to 30 centimeters long. The eight to ten-fold flowers are on a 0.5 to 5 millimeter long, downy-haired flower stalk . Their sepals are glandular-downy hairy. The whitish green, narrow elliptical petals are 7 to 9 millimeters long and 1.5 to 2 millimeters wide. The stamens are bare.
Chromosome number
The number of chromosomes in the varieties var. Palmense , var. Subplanum and var. Virgineum of Aeonium canariense is 2n = 36.
Systematics and distribution
Aeonium canariense is common in the Canary Islands .
The first description as Sempervivum canariense by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum was published in 1753. Philip Barker Webb and Sabin Berthelot put the species in the genus Aeonium in 1841 .
A distinction is made between the following varieties :
