Aert Mytens (also: Arnold or Arnout and Mijtens , lat. : Arnoldus Mytenus * 1541 or 1556 in Brussels ; † 28. September 1601 in Rome ) was a Flemish painter of Mannerism , which especially in Naples and L'Aquila had . In Italy he was known as Rinaldo Fiammingo . He was the oldest member of a well-known family of painters, which also included his nephews Isaac and Daniel Mytens , as well as Jan Mytens .

Life

There is some uncertainty about the date of birth of Mytens, for a long time it was assumed that he was born around 1541, but according to recent research he was not born until 1556 (Osnabrugge 2015). One of his teachers was Pieter de Kempener.

According to Karel van Mander , Mytens went to Rome early - around 1573 to 1575 - where he worked in the workshop of Anthonis Santvoort , who was called "green Antonio" (Italian: "il verde Antonio"); Mytens was also a lot with Hans Speckaert .

He then went to Naples, where he was accepted by Cornelis de Smet . Mytens lived in his house and worked as his student or assistant until 1591.

After the death of Cornelis de Smet in October of the same year, Mytens traveled back to Flanders, where he took care of de Smet's business affairs (Osnabrugge 2015, p. 19); According to Van Mander, he (also) visited friends in Brussels and his brother in The Hague .

On June 21, 1592 he was back in Naples, where he married the widow of Smet, Margherita de Medina; she was already his second wife and through this wedding he also became brother-in-law of Teodoro d'Errico . Mytens belonged to the painters' guild of Naples from 1592–93 (Osnabrugge 2015, p. 17). He painted religious altar and devotional pictures and portraits and is said to have had many students, including DA Bruno d'Altavilla (1581) and B. Castagnera from Genoa (1586).

Karel van Mander mentioned as particularly successful works by Aert Mytens: an Assumption of the Virgin with angels and apostles for "a church near Naples" and two altar panels - a Saint Catharina and a Santa Maria del Soccorso - for the Church of San Luigi near the Palace of the Viceroy from Naples; also very beautiful pictures of the three kings and a circumcision of Christ.

In July 1598 he left Naples and went with his children to L'Aquila in Abruzzo, where he made various paintings a. a. for the Franciscans of San Bernardino, for whom he had worked as early as 1594. His great crucifixion of Christ had great success .

From L'Aquila he went to Rome at the turn of the century, where he lived with his children in the house of Anthonis Santvoort in Via di Ripetta. On July 29, 1600 his daughter Dionora married his pupil, the painter Barent van Someren (Osnabrugge 2015, p. 30).

Aert Mytens alias Rinaldo Fiammingo died on September 28, 1601 in Rome (Osnabrugge 2015, p. 14, note 5). His daughter Dionora went to Amsterdam with her husband Barent van Someren. In her house Karel van Mander later saw a crowning of thorns by Christ of Mytens, which he praised very much and described as "very different from the normal Dutch manner"; the picture is now in the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm.
