Affonso Alves de Camargo Neto (born April 30, 1929 in Curitiba , Paraná ; † March 24, 2011 ibid) was a Brazilian politician of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), the Partido Popular (PP) and later the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PDSB).

Life

After attending school, Camargo, whose grandfather Afonso Camargo was governor of Paraná between 1916 and 1920 and 1928 and 1930 , studied civil engineering at the Universidade Federal do Paraná and worked as a civil engineer after completing his studies in 1952.

His own political career began in 1956 when he joined the PDC. In the following years he was promoted by Ney Braga , a former prefect of Curitiba who became governor of Paraná in 1961, and appointed him director of the Paraná Water and Electricity Board. He then became President of the newly founded development company Companhia de Desenvolvimento do Paraná (CODEPAR) in 1962 and, after serving as Minister of the Interior and Justice of Paraná between 1963 and 1964, Deputy Governor of Paraná and thus representative of Ney Braga until 1965.

He then became an advisor to Governor Paulo Cruz Pimentel , who was in office from 1966 to 1971 , after he had previously unsuccessfully applied against Ney Braga for a seat in the Federal Senate of the National Congress . Between 1973 and 1974 he served as President and Finance Director of the State Bank of Paraná before becoming State Treasury Secretary in 1974.

In 1979 he finally became a member of the Bundessenat as a representative of the Partido Popular and was a member of it until 1995.

As Minister of Transport in the cabinet of President José Sarney from 1985 to 1986, he was best known for the project introduced in 1985 to distribute vouchers for public transport . Between April and October 1992 he was Minister of Transport and Communications in the government of President Fernando Collor de Mello .

In 1995 he was elected for the first time as a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress and belonged to it after his re-elections in 1999, 2003 and 2007 until his death due to the consequences of liver cirrhosis .
