Afonso Celso de Assis Figueiredo Júnior , also Conde de Afonso Celso (born March 31, 1860 in Ouro Preto , Minas Gerais , † July 11, 1938 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian poet , historian and politician .

Life

Afonso Celso was the son of the monarchical politician Afonso Celso de Assis Figueiredo (1836-1912), Visconde de Ouro Preto, last chairman of the Council of Ministers in the Empire of Brazil, and the Francisca de Paula Martins de Toledo. At the age of 15 he published his first collection of poems, Prelúdios .

In 1875 he enrolled to study law at the Law Faculty of the University of São Paulo and received his doctorate with a thesis on Direito da Revolução in 1880. In 1884 he married Eugênia da Costa, the marriage had four children.

Celso was an advocate of abolitionism . At the age of 21, the member of the Brazilian parliament for the province of Minas Gerais was elected three times. His political and legal activity ended with the proclamation of the republic in 1889, he accompanied his father into exile in Portugal , following the imperial family.

On his return he devoted himself to teaching and became a lecturer in political economy at the Faculdade de Ciências Jurídicas e Sociais do Rio de Janeiro, later he was rector of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro ; at the same time he had started to turn to journalism and published in the Jornal do Brasil , with which he was associated for 30 years, the Correio da Manhã and other newspapers.

Afonso Celso co-founded the Academia Brasileira de Letras (Cadeira 36) in 1897 and was its president in 1925 and 1935. He joined the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro in 1892 and was president of the institute from 1912 to 1938, succeeding Baron Rio Branco .

The non-hereditary title Conde as Conde de Afonso Celso was bestowed on him by the Holy See.

Aftermath

In 1900, in his work Por que me ufano de meu país, he introduced the new creation of the word “ufanismo” (Ufanism) for an exaggerated, even euphemistic form of expression, as he did in his work Why am I proud of my fatherland? (Berlin 1910) not without humor and sarcasm. Of his many writings, Vultos e fatos (1892), O imperador no exílio (1893), the short story Lupe (1894), O assassinato do coronel Gentil de Castro (1897), Oito anos de Parlamento (1898) and O visconde de should be emphasized Ouro Preto (1935).
