The film asks the question, "Do we have a master plan for ultimate victory?" And argues that this is the story of how America planned the way for the invasion of North Africa - this great United Nations offensive. The French North Africa region was a theater of war during World War II when American and British forces landed there in November 1942 as part of Operation Torch .

The film describes the preparations for an invasion in North Africa are taken. There is an attempt to explain why French commanders support fascist governments in Africa. There is also talk of Allied intelligence activities in Algeria . President Franklin D. Roosevelt , 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945, and Winston Churchill , Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1940 to 1945, meet at the White House . Cordell Hull , United States Secretary of State from 1933 to 1944, and Sumner Welles , Deputy Secretary of State of the United States from 1937 to 1943, deliberate. Marshall Philippe Pétain , authoritarian Chef de l'État (Head of State), who led the Vichy regime, which collaborated with the National Socialist German Reich , from 1940 to 1944, and Adm. William D. Leahy , the first fleet admiral of the US Navy to meet in Vichy one. The diplomat Robert D. Murphy orders secret service forces to Algeria. Street scenes from Algiers are shown and positions of the French Foreign Legion .

The influence of the fascist Vichy regime is touched upon, as is the defensive strength of the French troops in Tunis . Finally, French troops are shown in the desert as well as on dry docks and scenes from Tunis.

These short films were shown in theaters as an extension of the articles from Time and Life magazines . Africa, Prelude to Victory is part of a series of productions titled March of Time Documentary , which included films with contemporary references to US history, government, politics and culture, and international affairs of concern from 1935 to 1953. The film was also titled: “March of Time, Vo. 9, No. 4 ".

The film was shown for the first time in Mexico on May 27, 1943 under the title Preludio a la victoria .

Award

The film released by The March of Time was nominated for an Oscar in the category "Best Documentary" at the 1943 Academy Awards, but had to take precedence over the productions Battle for Midway , Kokoda Front Line! , Moscow Strikes Back and Prelude to War .
