action

Gyeong-min is missing. On the same day, her shoes and her backpack are found on a bridge. The police assume suicide. Yeong-hui is said to have seen her last. The police received a video from a surveillance camera from an underpass showing Yeong-hui and Gyeong-min kissing. Only Yeong-hui is filmed on another camera as she leaves the underpass. Commissioner Kim questions Yeong-hui in the presence of Gyeong-min's mother. But Yeong-hui says she didn't notice Gyeong-min. However, Han-sol told the police that Gyeong-min was in love with Yeong-hui and that Yeong-hui said that evening to kill herself for her. But after Yeong-hui it was just a fun chat among friends. Gyeong-min's mother then attacks Yeong-hui and the interrogation is ended. The mother should hold back.

The news gets around in school and many students blame Yeong-hui for Gyeong-min's death. Gyeong-min's mother also secretly pursues Yeong-hui and confronts her. Yeong-hui doesn't believe that Gyeong-min committed suicide, but that she wants to kill her and went into hiding. But shortly afterwards the police find the body. Some schoolgirls go to Yeong-huis at home and want to cut their shoes. But when she suddenly comes out, everyone is surprised. Yu-ri attacks her with a knife and everyone quickly runs away. The next day, Yeong-hui is at school with one black eye and injuries.

The students should all come to Gyeong-min's funeral. Yeong-hui comes too and tries to convince her teacher that she has nothing to do with Gyeong-min's death. In addition, even before Gyeong-min, she expressed a wish to commit suicide. Their behavior is found to be disruptive. She goes to the toilet and drinks a liquid from a container there. She immediately begins to vomit and spit blood and is unconscious. When she is found, she is taken to the hospital and can be saved. However, she has a serious internal injury and at first can only get air through a ventilator and food is fed directly to her in liquid form.

The students discuss whether Yeong-hui is really responsible for Gyeong-min's death. Finally, a suicide note is found from Gyeong-min, in which she apologizes to some of her classmates, including Yeong-hui. As a result, the students no longer believe that Yeong-hui was to blame. Han-sol confesses to her at the hospital that she lied to the police and knew about Gyeong-min's suicide plans, but did not intervene. She is also in love with Yeong-hui and had an argument with Gyeong-min the day before. Yeong-hui and Han-sol kiss. After a while, Yeong-hui returns to school, but cannot speak and can only communicate using sign language or writing. When she got back to school, she said in sign language, “I am here to complete my death that you have been waiting for so long. I want to die before you guys. ”But nobody understands sign language.

Gyeong-min's mother continues to eye Yeong-hui. She wants to know what was going on in Gyeong-min. There is a final conversation. Yeong-hui says that Gyeong-min said no one would miss her when she is no longer there. Yeong-hui knew about her suicidal thoughts, but didn't stop her because she could empathize with Gyeong-min. Ms. Seo then takes a knife and stabs herself until others try to stop her.

Pierce Conran describes the music of Sunwoo Jung-ah as "threatening" and as a real highlight of the film, in which it underlines the psychological state of the characters. Panos Kotzathanasis is reminded of films like Pluto , Thread of Lies and King of Pigs , which also deal with school bullying. As in the film Confessions, Kim Ui-seok wraps his social commentary in secrets and fisticuffs. The film is characterized by Baek Seong-bin's camera work, which fills the screen with darkness and ominous shadows. Jeon Yeo-bin is great in her difficult role, both physically and mentally. According to Kotzathanasis, After My Death is a very powerful and memorable film. For Oriana Virone from Asian Movie Pulse it is an impressive debut film with a strong leading actress. She also emphasizes that the film focuses exclusively on female characters, which is a rarity in the cinema.

Production and Interpretation

In After My Death is Kim Ui-seok's thesis at the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA). He worked on the script for two years. Kim said he wanted to show the consequences of suicide for the bereaved and what happens to the sudden emptiness. He focused on the realism in the actions of his characters, so that they are understandable. The reasons for Gyeong-min's death are never revealed in the film, but the characters make assumptions. Kim wanted the shadow of Gyeong-min's death to grow so large that it would drive the characters into a state of madness. Kim also attached great importance to dealing with guilt. He wanted to create a situation where nobody is really guilty, but at the same time it is a central issue. Yeong-hui's classmates blame her. Yeong-hui insists on her innocence, while inside she blames herself. Kim wanted to paint a picture of society in which different perspectives meet.

Kim Ui-seok has lost a good friend herself and wanted to depict different emotions in the film.
