action

Just finished school, Tessa Young moves into the dormitory with the support of her mother and boyfriend Noah. She meets her roommate, Steph, and her friend, Tristan, know. Tessa's mother immediately worries that the two of them could be a bad influence on her. To reassure her, Tessa assures her that nothing will distract her from the university.

The next day she begins to study and befriends a boy named Landon. When she comes out of the shower, back in her room, she meets Hardin Scott, who has simply gained access to her room. Steph invites her to a party, but Tessa refuses. The next day she sees Hardin again with Molly and Zed in a café. In the library she meets Steph again and lets herself be persuaded to come to a party in the dormitory.

At the party, Tessa and Steph meet Zed, Molly, Jace and Hardin. During a game of Truth or Dare, Tessa is forced to drink alcohol and it is revealed that she is still a virgin. She takes the duty to "make out" with Hardin, but refuses. Scared of herself, she calls her boyfriend, who only makes her feel guilty. Frustrated, she ends the call and wanders around the party. In Hardin's room she finds a copy of the novel "Sturmhöhe" and runs into Hardin, who tries to kiss her. In a literary lecture, she sits down next to Landon and becomes entangled with Hardin in a discussion about the novel "Pride and Prejudice". Landon reveals that he will soon be related to Hardin because his mother and Hardin's father are planning a marriage.

Hardin approaches Tessa and insists that they "start over", whereupon he invites her to his favorite place, a lake. While they are swimming, Hardin explains to her that they can't just be friends and the two kiss. Then they eat in a diner where they meet Molly and Zed, which annoys Hardin and he asks Tessa to wait for her at the bar. Tessa tells Hardin that he will tell her boyfriend about them, but Hardin asks her not to because they are not officially together, which disappoints Tessa. Their boyfriend surprises them with a sudden visit and they spend the evening around a campfire.

During a round of card sucking, Jace deliberately drops the paper in order to kiss Tessa, which causes a fight between him and Hardin. While Noah and Tessa are sleeping in their room, she gets a call from Landon, whereupon she leaves Noah alone to check on Hardin, who ravaged the house while drunk. She calms him down, they reconcile and kiss. The next day, Tessa makes her way back to Noah in the dormitory, who now knows about her relationship with Hardin and is driving back home with a broken heart. In the end, Tessa and Hardin decide to start a relationship, but when her mother finds out about it, she threatens to let Tessa down financially if she should continue the relationship with Hardin.

Hardin finds a new apartment for himself and Tessa and they both attend the wedding ceremony of his father and Landon's mother. Hardin explains that his father was a drunkard and that his mother was attacked by the men he started fighting with while drunk. Tessa calms him down and the two return to their apartment, where they have sex. The next morning, while they bathe together, Hardin writes 'I love you' on Tessa's back.

Meanwhile, Tessa notices the text messages that Hardin receives from Molly. She tries to speak to him about it, but he storms off. After a long wait, she leaves the apartment and meets Hardin in the café with Molly, Zed, Steph and Jace. Molly reveals that Hardin's original challenge among friends was to get Tessa to fall in love with him and then leave her again. Tessa, shocked and heartbroken, runs away. He follows her and tries to explain that the bet was made before he knew her and that he really loves her. Tessa returns home to make up with her mother and Noah, and they both forgive her.

In the following weeks Tessa distances herself from Steph and her friends and moves into a new student apartment. She focuses on her studies, staying in touch with her mother and Noah, and applying for a job with Vance Publishing. One afternoon after a literature lecture, Professor Soto gives her the work Hardin turned in because he thought the work was about her. As she reads the paper, she returns to the lake where she and Hardin first kissed. Hardin appears and sits down next to her, quotes his work and says, “You once asked me who in the world I love most. You are that."
