Agassiz 'dwarf cichlid ( Apistogramma agassizii ) is a species from the cichlid family . It bears its scientific species name in honor of the naturalist Louis Agassiz .
Agassiz's dwarf cichlid is native to slow-flowing or stagnant waters of the Amazonian lowlands. He stays there over the fall foliage layer. It reaches a body length of about 10 centimeters, whereby the males exceed the females in body length and are also a bit more colorful.

Reproduction
He is one of the so-called hideout breeders and forms harems . A female lays around 150 eggs on the ceiling of a cave and ensures a constant exchange of water by flapping her fins. After hatching, the larvae are placed in a hollow on the ground and remain there until the yolk sac is used up. The swarm of young animals should then be fed with Artemia nauplii.

Keeping and care
Agassiz 'tilapia is now a popular aquarium fish that most other dwarf cichlids and characins is socialized. Agassiz's cichlid is omnivorous . The following food is suitable in the aquarium: live food ( Tubifex , mosquito larvae ), frozen food and dry food (granules, food flakes). Since the fish come from black water rivers, peat filtration is recommended.
Legal regulation in Austria
In Austria, the minimum requirements for keeping fish are defined in Regulation 486 in Section 7 and its Annex 5. See also the Wikipedia entry ornamental fish .
Especially for Agassiz 'cichlids, the following also applies: The fish must be kept in a harem, i.e. one male with several females. In addition, the following limit values must be observed:
value | annotation | |
---|---|---|
Minimum size of the aquarium | 60 × 30 × 30 | Length × width × height in [cm] |
Area for the water temperature | 22-30 | Degrees Celsius [° C] |
Area for the water hardness | 0-15 | Degree of German total hardness [⁰dGH] |
