description

Agave gigantensis grows solitary. The open rosettes are 50 to 100 cm high and 80 to 120 cm wide. The broad, hard-leaved, stiff, green to bluish, lanceolate, irregularly arranged, striped, pointed leaves are 40 to 75 cm long and 11 to 16 cm wide. The horny leaf margins are variably toothed brown to gray. The strong, gray terminal spine is 2 to 5 cm long.

The panicley, narrow inflorescence is 4 to 5 m high. The waxy buds are colored white, but the open, slender flowers are colored yellow. They are 48 to 60 mm long and appear on the upper part of the inflorescence on sparse, irregularly arranged branches. The extended flower tube is 4 to 5 mm long.

The elongated brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 35 to 40 mm long and 12 to 15 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave gigantensis grows endemically in Mexico, in Baja California Sur, in desert zones at an altitude of 600 to 1520 m. It is associated with Nolina beldingii and various species of cacti.

The first description by Gentry was published in 1978.

Agave gigantensis is a member of the Deserticolae group . It grows limited in mountainous regions of the Sierra de la Giganta in the southern part of the peninsula. The thick, hard-leaved, stiff, variably arranged striped leaves are typical. Agave gigantensis is closely linked to the other members of the Deserticolae group Agave avellanidens and Agave moranii . Agave gigantensis is grown at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Arizona, Tucson.
