Systematics and distribution

Agave guadalajarana grows in Mexico in the state of Jalisco on grassy slopes, in volcanic soil and in woodland at an altitude of 1500 to 2000 m. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1920. Synonyms are Agave dealbata Lem. ex Jacobi and Agave intrepida Greenman .

Agave guadalajarana is a member of the Parryanae group . It has limited growth near Guadalajara. Typical are the wart-like leaf margins with loose inflorescences, which differ within the group. It is similar to Agave colorata , but there are differences in shape, size and leaf structure. Individuals are called Agave megalacantha Lem. ex Jacobi cultivated in Central Europe. When dry, it is extremely frost-hardy to minus 18 ° C.

Agave guadalajarana is grown at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior , Arizona.
