Agave colorata is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Costal Agave, Costal Century Plant".

description

Agave colorata grows individually and forms compact rosettes with sparse runners. The gray to bluish, lanceolate, tapering, slightly roughened leaves are 25 to 60 cm long and 12 to 18 cm wide. The differently arranged wart-like leaf margins are serrated irregularly. The straight to curved brown to gray terminal spine becomes 3 to 5 cm long.

The paniculate, straight to curved strong inflorescence is 2 to 3 m high. The yellow flowers are 50 to 70 mm long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form on loosely arranged variable branches. The broad, cylindrical, funnel-shaped flower tube is 15 to 20 mm long.

The elongated to club-shaped, brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 45 to 55 mm long and 15 to 17 mm wide. The black seeds are 5 to 6 mm long.

Systematics and distribution

Agave colorata is distributed to a limited extent in the states of Sonora and Sinaloa in Mexico on coastal areas, limestone slopes and in woodland.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1942.

Agave colorata , a representative of the Ditepalae group , is found in small colonies scattered in coastal areas from Guyamas, Navojoa to the Sierra Surutato. The conspicuous, variable, light to dark prints that are found in the gray to bluish leaves are typical. The wart-like leaf margins are serrated. Agave colorata is morphologically and geographically closely related to Agave shrevei (Gentry: 1982, p. 431).
