Agave shrevei is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Century Plant".

description

Agave shrevei grows individually or in groups. The gray to bluish, egg-shaped to lanceolate, pointed leaves are 50 to 60 cm long and 12 to 18 cm wide. The differently arranged wart-like leaf margins are serrated irregularly. The pointed, brown to gray terminal mandrel is 2.5 to 5 cm long.

The paniculate, straight to curved strong inflorescence is 2.5 to 5 m high. The light green to light yellow flowers are 50 to 70 mm long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form on loosely arranged variable branches. The broad cylindrical to cup-shaped flower tube is 18 to 23 mm long.

The elongated brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 45 to 70 mm long and 15 to 25 mm wide. The black seeds are 6 to 7 mm long and 4.5 to 5 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave shrevei is common in Mexico in the states of Chihuahua and Sonora on stony limestone slopes and in woodland at an altitude of 930 to 1980 m. It is associated with Dasylirion spec. and Nolina spec.

The first description by Gentry was published in 1942.

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Agave shrevei subsp. shrevei
  • Agave shrevei subsp. magna
  • Agave shrevei subsp. matapensis

Agave shrevei is a member of the Ditepalae group and grows widespread in colonies in central Mexico. The subspecies shrevei , magna and matapensis differ in size, leaf and flower structure. Agave shrevei is morphologically and geographically closely related to Agave colorata (Gentry: 1982, p. 431). In the northern range, hybrids between Agave shrevei x Agave palmeri are known.
