description

Agave hiemiflora grows individually and forms compact rosettes with heights of up to 50 cm and 50 to 90 cm in diameter. The green to bluish, fleshy, variably arranged, pointed, lanceolate leaves are 30 to 55 cm long and 10 to 15 cm wide. The differently arranged, wavy leaf edges are serrated irregularly. The brown end thorn becomes 2 to 4 cm long.

The paniculate, straight inflorescence is 4 to 5 m high. The numerous yellow flowers are 65 to 90 mm long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form on loosely arranged branches up to the tip. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 8 to 13 mm long.

The elongated to egg-shaped, three-chambered capsule fruits up to 4 mm long and 2 mm wide. The black, moon-shaped seeds are 4 to 6 mm long and 3 to 4 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave hiemiflora is common in Guatemala and Mexico in the state of Chiapas . It grows on limestone slopes in woodland in 1950 to 2100 m altitude.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1982.

Agave hiemiflora is a member of the Hiemiflorae group . Agave hiemiflora is closely related to Agave congesta and Agave seemanniana ; nevertheless they differ in size, leaf and flower structure, but these Hiemiflorae species grow on limestone soils.
