Agave congesta is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Sierra San Christobal Agave".

description

Agave congesta grows singly and forms a short trunk. The rosettes are compact with heights of up to 100 cm and 100 to 200 cm in diameter. The green to bluish, sometimes frosted, variably arranged, pointed, lanceolate leaves are 50 to 120 cm long and 12 to 22 cm wide. The differently arranged wavy, warty leaf margins are serrated irregularly. The strong, dark brown to gray terminal mandrel is 3 to 7 cm long.

The panicley, straight inflorescence is 6 to 8 m high. The numerous yellow flowers are 55 to 70 mm long, appear on the upper part of the inflorescence and form up to the tip on short, variably arranged branches. The funnel-shaped flower tube is 10 to 13 mm long.

The elongated to egg-shaped three-chambered capsule fruits up to 4 mm long and 1.7 mm wide. The black, moon-shaped seeds are 5 to 6 mm long and 3.5 to 4 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave congesta is widespread in Mexico in the Sierra San Christobal region in the southeast of the state of Chiapas . It grows on stony slopes, in woodland at 2150 to 2480 m altitude.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1982.

Agave congesta is a member of the Hiemiflorae group . The variability within the populations is characterized by growth and shape (Gentry 1982 p. 479). Agave congesta is closely related to Agave hiemiflora , but differences in size, leaf and flower structure can be seen.
