description

Vegetative characteristics

Agave hurteri grows with a short, thick stem and individual, fairly open rosettes 1 to 1.8 meters long and 2 to 3 meters wide. Their numerous, lightly glaucous to light green and yellow-green, lanceolate, outwardly curved to ascending leaves are pointed. They are widest at or above their center. The upper side of the leaf is flat to slightly runny and slightly rough. The underside is more roughened. The leaf blade is usually 70 to 130 inches long and 15 to 22 inches wide. The leaf margin is more or less straight. There are 3 to 8 millimeter long peripheral teeth on it, which are 10 to 30 millimeters apart. They are seldom smaller and closer together or the leaf margin has almost no marginal teeth. The dark brown peripheral teeth are straight to curved. The dark brown to greyish brown, awl- shaped end thorn is widened at its base and furrowed on its top. It is 40 to 60 millimeters long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The strong, narrow, "panicle" inflorescence reaches a length of 5 to 7 meters. The rounded partial inflorescences are 30 to 45 centimeters long and are located in the upper two thirds of the inflorescence. The flowers are 55 to 85 millimeters long. Their tepals are tinted greenish yellow to purple in color. The corners are unequal. The outer ones are 16 to 28 millimeters long. The funnel-shaped to angular-cylindrical flower tube has a length of 9 to 15 millimeters. The cylindrical ovary is 30 to 45 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

Agave hurteri is widespread in the north-west of Guatemala in the mountains of the pine-oak forest zone at altitudes of 1,800 to 3,300 meters.

The first description by William Trelease was published in 1915.
