Playing times
From 1963/64 to 1973/74, the Regionalliga Südwest, together with the Regional Leagues North, West, Berlin and South, was one of the five second highest divisions in the Bundesliga. The league extended over the entire area of the FRVS , i.e. the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland . The champion and runner-up of the Regionalliga took part with the representatives of the other four seasons in the promotion round to the Bundesliga, in which the first two groups of five rose. In eleven years of the Regionalliga, only one south-west club managed to do this, namely VfB Borussia Neunkirchen (1964 and 1967). The last two clubs in the table were relegated to the amateur league. In 1966 and 1968, the third-to-last was also relegated, as Borussia Neunkirchen, a Bundesliga club, was relegated to the regional league during these years.
