Agave macroacantha is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Black Spined Agave".

description

Agave macroacantha grows solitary and forms a short trunk. The often sprouting rosettes are small. The variable, stiff, linear, bluish to gray leaves are 25 to 35 cm long and 2.5 to 3 cm wide. The wavy leaf margins are serrated. The dark brown to gray terminal spine is 3 to 3.5 cm long.

The panicley, narrow inflorescence is up to 2 m high. The green, frosted flowers are 50 to 56 mm long and appear in the upper area of ​​the inflorescence and reach to the tip, on irregularly arranged branches. Sometimes bulbils form on the inflorescence. The flower tube is up to 14 mm long.

The elongated, dark brown three-chambered capsule fruits are up to 45 mm long and up to 20 mm wide. The black seeds are 6 to 7 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide.

Systematics and distribution

Agave macroacantha grows in Mexico in limited regions in the states of Puebla and Oaxaca on stony slopes, in grass and woodlands. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini was published in 1833. Synonyms are Agave flavescens Salm-Dyck , Agave betteriana Van Houte , Agave subfalcata Jacobi and Agave oligophylla Baker .

Agave macroacantha is a member of the Rigidae group . The short trunk with relatively small leaves is typical. Trelease lists a large number of synonyms based on Zuccarini's work. Agave macroacantha is grown in the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California.
