Systematics and distribution

Agave murpheyi is distributed in the southwest of the United States in Arizona and in Mexico in the state of Sonora in various soil formations on stony slopes in desert regions at an altitude of 450 to 950 m. It is associated with numerous succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Frederick Gibson was published in 1935.

Agave murpheyi is a representative of the Ditepalae section . It forms narrow rosettes with short, broad leaves and resembles Agave chrysantha when young . The species seems to be associated in part with the old homes of indigenous peoples. It hybridizes with agave chrysantha . Agave murpheyi is grown in the Huntington Botanic Garden in San Marino, California.
