Agave vivipara is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). It is the most widespread species of the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae).

description

Agave vivipara grows almost without stems or with stems 20 to 60 (rarely 90) centimeters in length and forms radially spread rosettes with runners . The mostly rigid, hard fleshy, fibrous, ascending to horizontal leaves are linear to (very broad) lanceolate. They are narrowed and thickened at the base. The light green to gray frosted leaves are 60 to 120 (rarely only 40) centimeters long and 3.5 to 10 (rarely up to 20) centimeters wide. The leaf margin is straight to wavy and sometimes thinly cartilaginous. It usually has reddish brown or dark brown marginal teeth 3 to 5 millimeters in length (only rarely longer). The somewhat curved, conical to awl- shaped terminal mandrel is flat to shallow furrowed on the upper side and usually 1.5 to 3.5 centimeters long. It is initially dark brown and gray with age.

The approximately 3 to 5 meter high inflorescence is paniculate and open. Its 10 to 20 horizontally spreading to ascending partial inflorescences sometimes have bulbils . The individual flowers are 50 to 65 millimeters (only rarely from 40 millimeters) long. Their tepals are green to yellow and wither quickly. They have unequal tips from 18 to 24 millimeters (rarely from 15 millimeters) in length. The flower tube is 8 to 16 millimeters (rarely from 4 millimeters) long.

The chromosome number is 2n = 60, 120, 180.

Systematics and distribution

Agave vivipara is distributed in Mexico , Belize , Costa Rica , Honduras , Nicaragua , El Salvador and Panama at altitudes of up to 1500 meters (only rarely above). It has run wild in South Africa .

The first scientific description was published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . A distinction is made between the following varieties:

  • Agave vivipara var. Vivipara
  • Agave vivipara var. Deweyana
  • Agave vivipara var. Letonae
  • Agave vivipara var. Nivea
  • Agave vivipara var. Sargentii

Due to their wide distribution and variability, there are numerous synonyms . The question of whether Agave angustifolia Haw. is to be regarded as a separate species.
