Agios Georgios ( Greek Άγιος Γεώργιος ( m. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the municipality of Volvi in the northern Greek region of Central Macedonia . It consists of the two districts of Asprovalta and Vrasna on the Strymonic Gulf and is named after a church in the Kerdyllia Mountains.

location

The municipality of Agios Georgios is located in the east of the Central Macedonia region . It extends along the coastal plain on the Strymonian Gulf over 65.866 km² and extends in the west from the southern foothills of the Kerdyllia Mountains ( Κερδύλλια Όρη ) to their high altitudes in the northwest. The adjacent municipality is Arethousa . To the south of the Richios ( Ρήχειος ), which drains Lake Volvi into the Strymonian Gulf, lies the district of Rendina . The municipality of Amfipoli borders in the north.

The coastal strip is built almost seamlessly from north to south between Asprovalta, Nea Vrasna and Paralia Vrasnon. Vrasna is located off the coast on the southern foothills of the Kerdyllia Mountains.

Administrative division

As part of the territorial reform of 1997 , the two rural communities Asprovalta and Vrasna were formed into the municipality of Agios Georgios. According to the administrative reform of 2010 , this became one of six municipal districts in the newly established municipality of Volvi .

There is a connection between the EO 2 and the A 2 via junction 27 Vrasna / Asprovalta .

tourism

Vrasna Beach

Due to the water quality and the long clean beaches, bathing and leisure tourism is of great importance in the summer months. Four beaches totaling around 9 km in length have been awarded the Blue Flag . Since 2010, the two beach sections of Vrasna and Asprovalta have been regularly checked for their water quality in accordance with the EC Bathing Water Directive and have always been rated excellent since 2012 .

Agios Georgios is the starting point for the ancient sites and archaeological sites of Argilos and Amphipolis .
