Agop Terzan

Agop Terzan (born October 31, 1927 in Istanbul - † April 5, 2020 ) was a French astronomer of Armenian descent.

Life

At the University of Istanbul he received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and astronomy in 1945 and his master's degree in astronomy in 1949 . In 1956 he moved to France. He received his doctorate in 1965 from the University of Lyon . In 1980 he received a professorship.

Terzan was a member of the Société astronomique de France and the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

In the 1960s, Terzan discovered 710 variable stars and eleven globular clusters named after him: Terzan 1 , Terzan 2 , Terzan 3 , Terzan 4 , Terzan 5 , Terzan 6 , Terzan 7 , Terzan 8 , Terzan 9 , Terzan 10 and Terzan 11 . In the following years he discovered a further 4430 variable stars, 158 diffuse nebulae , 124 galaxies and 1428 stars with high proper motion.
