Agostino Poli , also Augustin Bohli (born December 10, 1739 in Venice , † 1819 there ) was an Italian conductor and composer .

Life

Agostino Poli came to Stuttgart as cello cellist in 1761 and was hired as cellist on August 2, 1762 at the court orchestra of Duke Karl Eugen , under the direction of Niccolò Jommellis . From 1763, when a position in the court orchestra became vacant, he was accepted into courtly services and performed as a cammer virtuoso . He remained in this position until 1777.

Because the financing of the court orchestra was not going well, Duke Karl Eugen was forced to cut expenses in the field of opera and theater by representing the clergy and the bourgeoisie, the landscape . This led to a new structure for the court orchestra, so that children from the country, whose education was promoted, replaced the very well paid foreign musicians and so the landscape could be calmed. Agostino Poli was not only one of the few virtuosos who remained in the orchestra, but was promoted to concertmaster in 1775 and Kapellmeister in 1782.

From January 3, 1775 he taught at the (Hohen) Karlsschule as a music teacher , including Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg in cello and composition, other students were Johann Kauffmann (1759-1834), Johann Abraham Sixt and Ernst Häußler .

He traveled to Paris on behalf of the Duke and published quartets and quintets there . He also set a few short operas to music, which were performed in honor of Franziskas von Hohenheim , Karl Eugen's second wife, always on her birthday on January 10th.

Due to quarrels with the singer Christoph Friedrich Schulz, he finally asked for his release in November 1792; after he retired from court service in 1793, his former student Johann Rudolph Zumsteeg followed him as concertmaster.

Agostino Poli was married to the singer Juliana Roger, daughter of the Stuttgart court sculptor . When he died, he had already been involved in legal inheritance disputes for three years and left behind a widow and his son, completely impoverished.
