The  Ahaggar cultural park or parc culturel de l'Ahaggar (from 1987 to 2011 Ahaggar National Park ) comprises the Ahaggar Mountains in southern  Algeria . The park, established in 1987, is one of the largest protected areas of the 22 national parks in Algeria with an area of 633,887 km² .

geography

The relief of the Ahaggar Mountains is predominantly of volcanic origin and its highest mountain Mount Tahat  (2908 m) lies in the  Atakor volcanic field. The Assekrem Plateau ( plateau de l'Assekrem ) is also located here. The Ahaggar is known for its bizarre rocky landscapes. Eroded volcanic vents form prominent elevations today. Granite and gneiss appear as the basement . Later volcanic and tectonic events left basalts and rhyolites that characterize the landscape. The Ahaggar lies at the level of the  Tropic of Capricorn , about 1500 km south of the Algerian capital  Algiers .

The area is mostly inhabited by  Tuaregs  . Its area is about the size of France , because it extends west-east to almost 2100 km and north-south to over 1500 km.

The Ahaggar Cultural Park covers an area of 633,887 km² (2017) in the Sahara . The most important inhabited settlement in the high mountain region is the Tamanrasset oasis . Other municipalities in the cultural park area are Abalessa, In Amguel, Aine Guezzame, Tin Zaouatine, Tazrouk, Ideles, In Salah, In Ghar and Fougarta Azouaia.

The culture park is located in the Algerian part of the mountains. Most of the Ahaggar is located in Algeria, but also includes parts of the  Niger  in the south and northeast of  Libya . Characteristic landscape elements of the park are the Sahara, sand dunes, the oasis of Tamanrasset and the Ahaggar Mountains.

ecology

Western Saharan montane thorn savannah or grasslands are present in the park. Persistent grassland can be found in isolated areas. The permanent vegetation is mainly bush-like. Acacias and tamarisks occur exclusively in the scree fields between the mountains.

The internationally endangered Dorcas gazelle and the maned jumpers  ( Ammotragus lervia ) live in the Ahaggar National Park.

history

The protection zone was established in 1987 by the Algerian government as a national park ("parc national de l'Ahaggar") and at that time covered an area of 446,700 km². By decree of the Prime Minister in 2011, the name was changed to "parc culturel de l'Ahaggar".

The cultural park is part of the government program Conservation de la biodiversité d'intérêt mondial et utilization durable des services écosystémiques dans les parcs culturels en Algérie .
