Ahn Jung-hyo or Ahn Jeong-hyo (born December 2, 1941 in Seoul ) is a South Korean writer and translator.

Life

Ahn was born in Seoul in 1941 and experienced the Korean War as a child . He studied English literature at Sogang University . After graduating, he was a war correspondent in Vietnam. He then worked for various newspapers (e.g. Korea Times , Korea Herald ) and as a translator. He also translated the novel "Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel García Márquez in 1975 into Korean, as well as numerous English-speaking authors such as John Irving .

In 1983 Ahn's debut novel War and City was published , which was published as a series in the magazine Realistische Literatur (Silch'ŏn munhak). The theme of the novel - South Korea's participation in the Vietnam War - was considered risky during the Chun Doo-hwans regime .

In a modified version, the work was republished under White War 1989, the English-language translation of which Ahn made himself and which appeared in the USA under the title White Badge . A year later, the novel The Silver Stallion (Korean: original title 은마 는 오지 않는다 ) was published, which deals with the Korean War, especially the presence of the US occupation forces in a Korean village.

He was recognized for his work both as a translator and as a writer. In 1982 he received the Korean Translation Prize and in 1992 the Kim Yu-jŏng Literature Prize. Three of his works have so far been filmed.
