Kim Yu-jŏng (born January 11, 1908 in Ch'unch'ŏn earlier Ch'ungsŏng , Kangwon-do ; † March 29, 1937 in Kwangju , Kyŏnggi-do ) was a Korean writer .
Life
Kim Yu-jŏng was born on January 11, 1908 in Ch'unch'ŏn , Kangwon Province , to a wealthy landowner. However, the family wealth was gradually used up by his big brother and he spent most of his life in great poverty. In 1930 he began studying at the Yŏnhŭi University of Applied Sciences in Seoul, but was de-registered after only two months. He switched to the Posŏng University of Applied Sciences, where he was also de-registered again.
He made his literary debut in 1933 with the publication of his work Der Bergwanderer (산골 나그네). In 1935 he joined the Circle of the Nine ( 구인회 ; 九 人 會 ), a literary circle that included famous writers such as Chŏng Chi-yong , Pak Taewon and Yi Sang . Due to tuberculosis , Kim never lived to see his thirtieth birthday and died on March 29, 1937. He therefore left only a few works: about thirty short stories and a handful of essays.
However, these works show a unique sense of humor and a deep understanding of local dialects and customs as well as the Korean economy during the Japanese colonial rule . Most of the stories take place in the mountain villages of his home province of Kangwon and the main characters are often innocent farmers.
The Gimyujeong station on the Seoul subway is named after him. The station is in his hometown of Ch'unch'ŏn .
