Aidani Aspro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white wine variety Aidani Aspro ( Greek Αηδάνι άσπρο , also transcribed Aïdani Aspro ) is native to the Greek archipelago of the Cyclades , especially on the islands of Naxos , Santorini and Paros . Its origin is believed to be in Asia.

The late-ripening variety produces a flowery wine and is mainly used for blends with the Assyrtiko and Athiri grape varieties , for example for the dry white wines on Santorini and Paros and for the straw wine Liastos . Wines made from pure varietals are rarely found.

There is also a red grape called Aidani Mavro , which is not related to the white Aidani Aspro.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The bronze-colored, spotted young leaves are only slightly hairy.
  • The small leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set medium-wide in comparison to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium-sized (at least 500 grams) but long. The round berries are medium-sized and yellowish-green in color.

The late growing grape variety ripens approx. 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late among the white grape varieties. In Greece it can usually be harvested between August 25th and September 10th. The variety is sensitive to the fungal diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew of the grapevine . However, their resistance to drought and drought is remarkable.

Aidani Aspro is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
