from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Athiri ( Greek Αθήρι ) is a white wine variety native to Greece . It is recommended to cultivate it in Crete , the Peloponnese , the Dodecanese and the Cyclades , and it is also approved on the island of Evia . With a total of 1,008  hectares of planted vineyards (as of the end of the 1990s), it ranks 8th among the white varieties in Greece's grape variety index.

In addition to its qualities as a wine grape, it is also valued locally as a table grape . The late-ripening variety produces a flowery wine and is mainly used for blends with the Assyrtiko and Aidani Aspro grape varieties , for example for the dry white wines on Santorini , such as the Nykteri and for the straw wine Liastos . In Rhodes , the dry and delicate white wine "Athiri de Rhodos" is made from it. In Crete near Heraklion , it is blended with the Thrapsathiri and Vilana varieties to make Peza.

Athiri is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).

There is also a red variety called Athiri Mavro .
