history
As early as 1963, in the course of the dissolution of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyassaland, it was decided to found Air Malawi as well as Air Rhodesia and Zambia Airways as a subsidiary of Central African Airways (CAA). Air Malawi started flight operations with two Douglas DC-3 and three DHC-2 Beaver from the CAA's inventory. The five Vickers Viscount remained with the parent company, but operate on behalf of the three subsidiaries as needed. With the unilateral declaration of independence from Southern Rhodesia in 1965, the end of Central African Airways began. From February 4, 1966, the CAA was forbidden to fly to Kenya , Tanzania or Uganda or to use their airspace. For Air Malawi, the connections carried out on behalf of the CAA were thus lost. In 1967, today's Air Malawi was founded as an independent successor company.
In 1972 the Vickers Viscount were replaced by BAC 1-11 . From 1974, London Gatwick was also served . After a few individual changes to the fleet, a Boeing 737 , an ATR 42 and in 1993 a Dornier Do 228 were bought to modernize flight operations. In 2006 another 737 was bought to complete the fleet.
On November 18, 2012, the airline filed for bankruptcy to reduce debt so that the company can be more easily privatized. Flight operations ceased on February 13, 2013. Furthermore, on this date 90% of the workforce, 243 employees, were laid off. With the help of Ethiopian Airlines , which took over a 49% stake in the company, the newly founded Malawian Airlines began flight operations in 2013. The Malawian government owns 51% of the airline.
