A violent storm is raging in London , causing delays and cancellations of flights at airports. Flight 686 to New York is the last one to the USA for the time being .

Only a handful of passengers board the plane, the majority of whom are shady characters. Arms dealer Max Corrigan and his two bodyguards Luke Jones and Gabriel Smoker, the two soldiers Sam Watson and Kenny Barnes, who have already been noticed by violent crimes, the art dealer and SIS agent George Myers, the talkative geography teacher Bob Turner, who has just left his fiancée and drunk Alan Fletcher, the frivolous lovers Chris and Lindsay who want to have sex everywhere, the doctor Kailash who lost his daughter to a military maneuver and the shy Rachel are completed by the stewardesses Harriett and Laura and the stewards Roberto and Phil. George delivers a box containing a $ 100 million Chinese vase to a buyer.

During the flight, Kailash notices that the machine is making a curve, which is unusual on this route. In addition, Alan can no longer find his seatmate Bob and discovers some drops of blood. The lovers who are secretly enjoying themselves in First Class are also killed. Phil is now looking for Bob in the hold. When Phil remains missing, the soldier Kenny goes on a search, who finds him dead together with the other three passengers. The air traffic controllers are meanwhile taken over by the SIS agents Moss, Millward and Cutter after a hostage-taking is feared. On the plane, Gabriel collapses dead from being poisoned. In addition, the passengers discover the dead pilots, with Kenny being shot by Harriett. Luke and Harriett reveal their plan to the survivors. Kailash gets up emotionless and hits himself in the skull. George tells about a legend of the Chinese god of the dead, whose soul is therefore locked in the vase and looking for the only suitable person. The possessed Harriett shoots the vase and then shoots Max and himself.

George has sneaked into the cockpit unnoticed and wants to crash the plane over the open sea in order to destroy evil in the form of the god of the dead forever. He has now taken possession of Rachel, who kills Sam and supports Luke in taking over the cockpit. Alan and Laura cause a short circuit in the on-board electronics, so that the machine will inevitably crash. Roberto wanted to prevent this and was therefore murdered by Alan beforehand.

The plane crashes into the sea. The entire pilot crew is led away in the tower, where you can see that Malcolm has just been taken possession of by the god of the dead.
