Aise Johan de Jong
Aise Johan de Jong (born January 30, 1966 in Bruges ) is a Dutch mathematician , born in Belgium , who works with algebraic geometry .
De Jong attended grammar school in The Hague and studied at the University of Leiden from 1984 , where he graduated from Van de Ven. From 1987 he was at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (Nijmegen), where he received his doctorate “cum laude” in 1992 with Joseph Steenbrink and Frans Oort . He then spent a year at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, at Bielefeld University and 3 years as a scholarship holder of the Dutch Academy of Sciences at Utrecht University. After a year as an assistant professor at Harvard and two years at Princeton University , he was a professor at MIT . In 2005/06 he was at Columbia University , where he is currently (2009) a professor.
In 2000 he received the Cole Prize in Algebra for his research on the solvability of singularities with alterations, especially for the work Smoothness, Semistability and Alterations (Publications Mathematiques IHES, Vol. 83, 1996, p. 51). The theory of alterations created a simpler, geometrical approach to the problem of the resolution of singularities, for which the original proof (for characteristic 0) by Heisuke Hironaka was very complicated. He also works in arithmetic-algebraic geometry.
In 1996 he received the EMS Prize . In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Barsotti-Tate Groups and Crystals ).
He is married to the mathematician and critic of the financial industry Cathy O'Neil and has three sons with her.
